What is periodic elevator testing?
Periodic elevator testing is the scheduled proof-testing of an elevator's safety systems — controlled tests showing that the governor, safeties, brakes, buffers, and valves actually perform, not just that they look intact during a visual inspection. The cadence comes from ASME A17.1 as adopted in Texas: no-load tests recur annually and full-load, full-speed tests on a multi-year cycle — Category 1 and Category 5 in trade shorthand. The contractor performs the tests; where required, a registered elevator inspector witnesses them.

- Records review — pull the unit's test history and last inspection report to identify which tests are due.
- Scheduling — set the date and coordinate the registered elevator inspector when the test must be witnessed, so both parties mobilize once.
- Staging — bring in calibrated test weights for full-load tests; no-load tests need instrumentation only.
- Testing — run each required test for the equipment class, from governor and safety application to brake holding, buffers, and hydraulic pressure and relief-valve checks.
- Corrections and retest — anything that fails is corrected and retested before the unit returns to service.
- Documentation — complete the test records, update the machine-room tags, and give the owner copies for the compliance file.

- A traction elevator whose machine is mounted inside the hoistway instead of a separate machine room. The tests are the same; the access and staging are not.
What does elevator testing cost?
Testing is priced per unit and per test category, and the drivers matter more than any flat figure. A no-load test on a single hydraulic is a fraction of the effort of a witnessed full-load test on a bank of gearless cars.

How does compliance factor into elevator testing?
Testing is a compliance obligation: Chapter 754 of the Texas Health and Safety Code requires owners to maintain equipment to the standards the commission adopts by rule, and TDLR adopts the ASME codes that carry the periodic test requirements. The annual inspection under §754.019 is where that duty gets checked — overdue testing becomes a written deficiency.

- No. The inspection is performed by a registered elevator inspector and examines condition and records; testing is contractor work that physically proves the safety systems. The inspector checks that testing is current and witnesses certain tests, but they are separate visits, roles, and line items.
- Who witnesses an elevator test in Texas?
- Tests that require witnessing are witnessed by a registered elevator inspector — the same QEI-certified role that performs the annual inspection under §754.019. Prime runs the equipment; the inspector observes and verifies. We coordinate both calendars so witnessing happens in one visit.
- What is the difference between a Category 1 and a Category 5 test?
